Monday Geekiness: The Writer’s Strike and Comics

I am a geek. Seriously. I’ve been reading comic books off and on for ages, and have loved sci-fi/fantasy since I was tiny. Comic Book Resources (CBR) posted an interview with Milo Ventimiglia where they asked him about Heroes (he was at last weekend’s New York Comic-Con). He says he was a realist, that eventually shows end. They asked him about the writer’s strike, and while I agree that the strike most affected the crews and to some extent, vendors… it bothered me that he said that writers “make a very nice living.” Actors, directors, and producers do- certainly. Head…

Saturday Fun

So I just spent the better part of an hour changing my RSS feeds to FeedBurner. If you happen to read this through a reader occasionally, I changed the feed. If you normally read it through a reader, but noticed that I’m still posting stuff, but it isn’t showing up in you’re reader… that’s why. The new address is http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmericanWhitney Let’s close out some of the tabs I have today. Miley Cyrus has a new music video for a track that is definitely meant for clubs. It’s a good song (it’d be better if it was done by someone else)…

Project Runway: About last night…

This blog post contains spoilers for last night’s episode, which I call The One Where They Make Clothes for Heidi. If you haven’t watched it yet, don’t click the link for the full post! Seriously. I don’t want to spoil it at all.

The internet has changed everything.

The internet has changed the way we do everything. We have fancy phones that let us stay connected with the world- even beyond how connected text messaging made us. Right now there is an epidemic of teen suicides because of bullying. In very recent times, 4 teenagers killed themselves because they were bullied about being gay. But there have been plenty of high profile teen suicides that were linked to bullying in general. Remember the girl who killed herself after a woman created a fake MySpace profile to torture the girl with? While the woman was arrested, there wasn’t really…

Preschool is a petri dish

I haven’t always been a stay at home mom. For the first two or so years of the Oldest Kidlet’s life, I worked in advertising. My job was not nearly as interesting as Mad Men. There were those who drank too much, clients who asked for one thing and detested it when we delivered… but you know, everything’s more interesting when the women wear pearls and men wear three piece suits. The Oldest Kidlet went to daycare for about a year of that time. While he was pretty darn healthy, I was sick more that year than I’d ever been.…

Kitchen Shortcuts: the Improvised Sauce

WARNING: This post contains pictures taken on a cameraphone. For those of you who require hi-res fancy pictures… sorrry! I should get a new camera for me and a cheap one for the Oldest Kidlet, who is quite the photographer- but rough on cameras. I know, I’m the Queen of Make-It-From-Scratch. But you know… there are a few places that I take shortcuts. A few products out there that you can get quality goods without filling foods with preservatives. I don’t use baking mixes anymore- making a cake from scratch really doesn’t take that much longer. Same with pancakes. So…

It’s that time again: vaccinations

It’s that time again: flu season. I know that a lot of people want to shy away from vaccinations- because they’ve heard a lot of conspiracy theories about vaccinations. First, there is no conclusive evidence that vaccines cause autism in children. Second, some people say that you shouldn’t get vaccinated because these diseases don’t exist. Wrong! In areas where people have reduced vaccination rates, you see these diseases that we thought were ancient history popping up. Like the epidemic in CA right now, where whooping cough is spreading through the country- and killing babies who were too young to have…

Getting things started.

It’s Monday- and I hope that everyone had a lovely weekend. Someday I’ll talk more about where we visited, but this is more about today. I woke up at 5 am when my in-laws’ cat started eating my cat’s food. Zorro’s pretty quiet when he’s eating, but Woogie is loud. So I woke up, and without my glasses on, saw red flashes of light reflected over my computer desk and thought that something really weird must be going on with my computer. Realizing that there would be no way for the light to be coming from my computer tower under…
