Who am I, and why American Whitney?

Hi people. I’ve had a bit of an uptick in readers lately, so I thought it might be time to talk a little about who I am and what this blog is about. I’m Whitney. I’m a 31 year old writer (unpublished, natch), married, and the mother of two boys, 3 and 5. Once upon a time, I worked at Disneyland. It was one of the most awesome jobs you could have, and one of the most frustrating ones as well. But well worth it. (At the very least, I got a husband out of it) This blog is about…

Girl Power, Empowerment… and Sucker Punch

I’ve been meaning to write this post since I saw the movie last Saturday. First, I should say that I liked the movie. It wasn’t perfect, but honestly… I never bought that this was supposed to be a movie about female empowerment. That said, though, shame on Zac Snyder for thinking that this was female empowerment. I don’t doubt that the actresses felt empowered, having gone through a rigorous boot camp to learn how to wield all their weapons believably (and they do- they were more believable than most male casts in war movies), but that doesn’t mean that the…

Live Shows are Hard.

Last night, Charlie Sheen was booed offstage during the first night of his “Torpedo of Truth Tour.” I’ve made a conscious effort not to talk about him here, but now seems like a good time as any – since there’s a moral to the tale. LiveNation thought they could capitalize on Charlie Sheen’s madness. They set up a few dates, when it was successful, they expanded the tour. But what was going to be on the tour? Nobody really knew. Tellingly, Charlie Sheen said that he planned on riffing when he was on stage. Never a good idea. He started…

Who’s my Registrar? Not GoDaddy.

This week, graphic video surfaced of GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons hunting and killing an elephant in Zimbabwe, the second year that he’s gone on a hunt to do so. He claims that he does this to help the poor farmers in the area, where elephants trample crops. Not surprisingly, a lot of people are mad. From PETA and HSUS (the expected voices against anything involving animals, though they’re correct in anger at this one) as well as Change.org. (Here are two stories from PC Magazine and Wired on the fallout) So what’s the big deal? The African Elephant is a…

What do people have against breastfeeding?

No, I won’t be putting together an April Fool’s post. There are plenty of sites like Think Geek and Google that do it much better. (While Google’s official prank isn’t as great as some years in the past, just type Helvetica into Google and see what happens) Instead, I wanted to write about something I saw about yesterday that bothered me. Good Morning America had a story about a baby doll that simulates breastfeeding. The girl puts on what looks like a little apron (with flowers where nipples might be) and when the doll is near the flowers, it starts…
