What I’ve learned from blogging daily.

I’m almost 2/3 of the way through NaBloPoMo. I thought it would be harder. But maybe it’s because I realized a couple of things early on. Blogging is much easier for me than working on my creative writing. Since I’ve been blogging about my life for the last 9 years (on Livejournal up until I started posting here), sitting down and writing about what’s on my mind isn’t something new. A deadline is a beautiful thing. Over the summer, I started to feel like I didn’t have something to say. Then when I did, I felt like I had to…

He did it!

“He did it! Zorro peed!” My oldest came running down the stairs, and stared up at me as I tried to shift gears from the news story I was watching. I took a deep breath and wondered what sort of mess I was going to have to clean up, since Zorro is our cat. “Where.” “In his potty. He did it! All by himself!” My son started to dance around the cat excitedly. “I’m so proud, Zorro.” “Oh. His litter box.” I admit the celebration was amusing, but not entirely surprising. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, we’re still having issues getting…

Is Klout Still Relevant?

In this space, I’ve talked about Klout’s change to their algorithm. For a lot of social media types, it’s been disastrous- since companies who hired them wanted to know their personal Klout scores to use as a gauge of effectiveness. Then it came out that Klout created shadow profiles for you if someone you’re connected to is on Klout. Say you’re a friend of mine on a social network. When I use Klout, in order to discover if you helped or hurt my score, it calculated your score even though you aren’t actually on Klout. And it doesn’t just spider…

School recitals & fits of rebellion

Today was Little Kidlet’s first big school recital. They tend to have something once a month. It could be a parade in the schoolyard or a bigger show in the school’s chapel (it’s at a church). Off I went with camera in hand. Despite being there early, there were people in rows ahead of me who politely promised not to lean into my camera view, and then did just that. I’m not sure how good the video actually is, yet. Next time I’ll just have to be there earlier- especially since the next one is the Christmas pageant. Since LK…

Muse. Or the devil sitting on my shoulder, you pick.

Here I am, trying to write a blog post that has nothing to do with my kids or being sick. I’ve started a few posts, but as I start typing, I hear her purr in the background. One of the characters from the thing I shouldn’t be writing at all, my literary equivalent of a little bit of candy after dinner. While I’ve always written (including a truly atrocious spy novella in high school), I spent almost a decade running an online Star Wars RPG- which was a huge writing jam between friends. While I guided some of the adventures,…

Sorry, this isn’t a real post.

I’m still not feeling very well. But we’re back to the week and the strain of everything is making me a little brain dead. Herman Cain’s wife defended him against the sexual harassment charges. I’m not sure what that’s supposed to prove- since it’s not like she can speak to how he acts when she isn’t around. Or like people would tell her if he was trying to chase after women when she wasn’t around. I suppose I’ve been stung by one too many politician’s wife, standing there denying any wrongdoing of her spouse- right up until the men admit…

Checking in

I’m finally getting my day off. I felt lousy this morning and discovered I had a 100.8 fever. So it’s just me, a bag of chips and a Criminal Minds marathon- which means, I’d like some reassurance that human beings are actually decent. The Little Kidlet is doing well. He still has a fever off and on, but you would never know he has bronchitis- he’s been dancing, playing, and just as stubborn as ever. Last night, TheBoy and I went out for dinner. After surveying our options, we decided to go to PF Changs- since they accommodate gluten-free diners,…

Getting out my soapbox for a bit.

I haven’t posted much about Occupy Wall Street- though I know that if you’re just watching the news, you probably get the idea that it’s a bunch of slackers/stoners/modern hippies in their 20s or 30s. In fact, it’s probably more like the demographic makeup of the earliest tea party rallies (before the GOP took over those- and yes, they did do just that). A lot of people in their 20s-30s, and a healthy amount of people from every other demographic you can think of. The media wants to try to portray the OWS movement as just a bunch of kids-…

My Day Off

Today was My Day Off. I get them now and then, when my mother-in-law has the day off from work and the kidlets have a day off from school. On previous days off, I’ve gone to Disneyland, and even a writing-fest at Starbucks. They were great, and I’ve been looking forward to this one. Yesterday, however, I noticed that the Little Kidlet was coughing a lot more than usual- and that the snot that had been dripping everywhere (we all thought it was allergies or something) went from clear to green. Uh oh. So I took him to the doctor…

Fallout from allegations.

I’m sure you’ve heard about the troubling allegations coming out of Penn State. That Jerry Sandusky, an assistant coach, allegedly* sexually assaulted several children over the years- in Penn State properties. It was reported to college officials, and nothing was done to report the crime to police. Joe Paterno, Penn State’s revered coach was involved (in that he reported it to someone at the college, not the police, almost a decade ago and nothing was done). He stated he’d retire at the end of the season, but was rightfully fired by the school. Yes, rightfully. It doesn’t matter what a…
