Lesson Learned: The Christmas Parade

Here in town, there’s an annual Christmas Parade. People show up, school bands march… Last year we went, bringing our trusty all-weather picnic blanket. The only problem there was that most people brought the fold-up chairs, and so the kids had to stand the entire time to see anything. So we planned on bringing our chairs. And we did! We packed up the kids, and headed out decaffinated and a little hungry, figuring we’d pick up something along the parade route. I know. I’m sure you guessed that this is where things went awry. We found a spot (actually the…

Friday Wrap-up: 12/7/12

Usually I write my blog posts a day ahead, but yesterday I didn’t quite feel like putting a post together. So you get a collection of links, broken up in the categories of this blog! (Pirate, btw, is anything I’m really passionate about. Not necessarily actual pirates) {Geek} The Hawkeye Initiative – What happens when you take Marvel’s Hawkeye and redraw comic art with him in part of the ladies? A hilarious good time that points out the effect that male gaze has on the comic industry. The Star Trek: Into Darkness teasers are out. Make sure you watch the…

Missing the Nickelking.

As I mentioned yesterday, it’s been 2 years (exactly) since Jerad passed away. For those new here, Jerad was my best friend. He was the person I would talk to about everything, endlessly- usually online. He used to give nickels to special people in his lives (myself included)- and online, he went by Nickelking. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss him. I miss him terribly. I can’t even turn to the internet for some distraction either. This week I saw someone advertising the Eleventh Doctor’s tweed coat, and I found myself swallowed up by grief. I still…

It’s been a year?

This week it’s the Santa Shop at the Oldest Kidlet’s school- where the kids can bring in money and pick out gifts for their loved ones, and bring them home wrapped. When the Oldest Kidlet started begging me for money, I was reminded of what happened during last year’s Santa Shop. It’s been one year since I was hospitalized for extremely low iron and kept in the hospital because I had mysterious fevers and pains that needed to be diagnosed! And it’s been a year without many health scares. I’ve had a few flareups. But before I went to the…

In the Car: Pastafarians and Bacon.

I’m sure most everyone can agree that the most interesting conversations between parents and kids (since even if you don’t have kids, you were one once) happen in cars. There’s something about a confined space that seems to bring out the odd conversations. The Oldest Kidlet’s school has a yearly Winter Program, where they kids since a bunch of non-religious Christmas songs. You know, the ones that mention Christmas, but not God. So a lot of songs about Santa or snow. This year, one of the songs his class is singing is “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.” The former…

The Penguin Umbrella.

Back when I was a kid, I watched a lot of the Adam West Batman series. I waited and hoped that Bruce would wise up and realize that he was in love with Catwoman. And I loved Batgirl. A librarian who fights crime? COME ON. If you weren’t aware, this was where I got my first taste of Batman’s rogue’s gallery. And frankly, Cesar Romero as the Joker and Burgess Meredith as the Penguin isn’t such a bad place to start. A lot of people assume that growing up in Southern California means that we don’t get much rain. While…
