The problem with slut jokes

You might have seen that Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner during a press junket responded to a question about Black Widow’s romantic interests in Age of Ultron (not saying who, SPOILERS, but it was brought up to them because in prior films it seemed like her interests were aimed at Captain America and Hawkeye) and both men joked that she’s a slut, a whore, and she has a fake leg (which painted people with prosthetics as being something unattractive). And people on the internet immediately said that wasn’t cool. So why do people care? Black Widow’s just a fictional character,…

Find a Better Idol.

I’m almost 34. I keep accidentally saying I’m 34 already. This isn’t a post about getting older. It’s actually about being young, to be honest. I remember being young and crushing on an actor or singer, thinking they were perfect and good. But that was back in the 90s, before the internet (I know, I remember life before the internet, and the early days of the internet). Back before the 24/7 news cycle, where it was possible for a celebrity to have a personal life that different from their public persona. When it was utterly shocking when River Phoenix died…

People are funny.

Adam Carolla has a book out. In an interview promoting that book, he said that women aren’t funny. Yes, it wasn’t a coincidence. He trolled us all, knowing that that his name alone isn’t going to sell his book. Unfortunately, the notion that women aren’t funny is everywhere. Don’t like a particular female comedian? Just say that she shows that women aren’t funny. I hear/read this all the time. When the show Whitney debuted, the most common comment I saw online wasn’t wondering if the scripts were generated from a computer compiling every bad sitcom of the 90s- it was…

No, I’m not letting Chris Brown off the hook.

Today I was going to write about Whitney Houston. But last night during the Grammys (I didn’t watch, but I followed along on Twitter), I realized that the bulk of the tweets I saw were about Chris Brown. Short recap for anyone who just woke up from a coma. The night before the 2009 Grammys, Chris Brown violently assaulted Rihanna in a car after a pre-Grammys party. He was arrested, convicted and ultimately sentenced to 5 years probation and some community service. The Grammys invited him back to perform. The man responsible for the Grammys, executive producer Ken Ehrlich had…

Super? More like Meh.

As did most of the US, I watched the Super Bowl. Admittedly, I didn’t pay much attention to the game itself. It was my job to provide our small party with the snacks, so I was putting food in and out of the oven. And watching the ads. After all, I did work in advertising. While the end of the game was a nailbiter, I seem to recall more moments that left me wondering if teams were giving it their all. The ads were a bit underwhelming. While there were a few that were memorable (Hyundai’s Rocky spot, the Camaro…
