Why Hockey is For Everyone… isn’t.

Note: Despite the tone, I wouldn’t be this harsh if I didn’t love the sport. My two favorite teams are both called out, because I think they could do better. We’re entering Hockey is For Everyone month. This is the second year of the NHL’s initiative for inclusivity. To highlight disabled players, women’s hockey as well as LGBT inclusivity by hosting You Can Play nights. Last year saw mostly merchandise put out by the NHL – t-shirts that boasted Hockey is For Everyone, as well as pride flavored shirts for every single team. I don’t recall seeing if any of…

Down w/ Locker Room Banter.

This post is shamelessly inspired by TW’s post on FB about something her daughter said, but it’s been on my mind since last week. It’s easy to say that what Donald Trump said in that Access Hollywood tape was vile – especially when he claims it’s locker room banter. But the issue is that the more we talk about how it isn’t locker room banter, we ignore what men do talk about in spaces where they feel like they can say whatever is on their mind. Sure, I’m a woman. But I’ve worked in a lot of male dominant jobs…

The Ancient One is… Celtic?

Marvel, seemingly responding to critics about casting Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, released the background for the character. Saying that this embodiment is Celtic. Well here’s the statement: Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU to life. The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray…

The problem with slut jokes

You might have seen that Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner during a press junket responded to a question about Black Widow’s romantic interests in Age of Ultron (not saying who, SPOILERS, but it was brought up to them because in prior films it seemed like her interests were aimed at Captain America and Hawkeye) and both men joked that she’s a slut, a whore, and she has a fake leg (which painted people with prosthetics as being something unattractive). And people on the internet immediately said that wasn’t cool. So why do people care? Black Widow’s just a fictional character,…

I Skipped the Oscars and Patricia Arquette was WRONG.

(I should state that these opinions are my own. They are not a reflection of anyone that I know who works in Hollywood. Wouldn’t want any of you to get flack for my opinions.) I didn’t watch the Oscars this year. And I’m happy I didn’t. I did catch John Legend and Common’s performance. And I did see Lady Gaga and Julie Andrews. But it’s hard to watch a show you just can’t really support anymore. In recent years, I stopped watching fashion coverage. While I liked seeing what people wore- I do love fashion. The coverage was ridiculous- the…

Whitney Watches: Agent Carter 1.01 & 1.02

It’s been far too long, but I’m back with another vlog – and it’s about Marvel’s Agent Carter – the 7 part television event (that’s a fancy name for mini-series) focusing on Peggy Carter. Last night’s two hour premiere was made up of two episodes, and the above video are my mostly coherent thoughts. I promise that next week I’ll have it more together- the Whitney Watches videos aren’t recaps, they’re meant more to talk about characterization, possible arcs and all the fun references. But I was overwhelmed by the awesomeness. If you missed last night’s episodes and didn’t DVR…

Satya Nadella : A Lesson in Privilege

Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO was at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in Arizona, and asked by Maria Klawe (Harvey Mudd College President and Microsoft board member) what women should do if they feel uncomfortable asking for a raise. And well, he suggested that they don’t ask for raises. But believe in the system. And that not asking is a superpower and good kharma. (If you click the above link it has his full answer, his initial tweet about the backlash, as well as an email he sent to Microsoft employees that actually was a better response than…

More thoughts about Bloodlines.

I know, I already posted a vlog about Bloodlines, but that was very much my on the fly opinion. But having given it a chance to sit, and being able to discuss it with a few people… I have a few more things that bothered me about the episode- a backdoor pilot for “Supernatural: Bloodlines.” When the show was first announced, the list of the main characters was comprised of men. It wasn’t until much later that they started to announce female characters. Which was a bit of a relief. Since Supernatural is such a male heavy show already- I…

Cartoon Network: no girls allowed?

It isn’t very often that I find a blog topic that manages to ping all three parts of my blog title, but when it does happen, it gets me all riled up. Or maybe it’s just the subject at hand that has me in a mood. Recently, Paul Dini spoke with Kevin Smith about why Cartoon Network canceled his show, Tower Prep. The long and the short of it was that too much of its audience were girls. No, really. Cartoon Network wanted an audience of boys. And because the show couldn’t deliver, they cancelled it to replace it with…

Like a girl.

I try my hardest to teach my boys that toys aren’t gendered, neither are TV shows or other interests. But I’m still battling their peers, so there are a lot of follow-up conversations. Yesterday, I was working with the Little Kidlet on his homework and the Oldest Kidlet was going on about something. I honestly don’t remember what, but it was probably movie related- they’d been watching promos on a new DVD. I do remember is that he’d been pouring himself orange juice when he shook his head, and seriously said. “But that’s a girl thing.” The Little Kidlet gasped.…
