NaBloPoMo #4 – Whitney’s Guide to Introducing Kids to Conventions

This has been our first year taking the Kidlets to comic cons, and I think we’ve learned a lot. And I thought I’d share our tips to introducing kids to comic conventions. Take your kids for only one of the days. Sundays are best, because they tend to be the least crowded- and I know a lot of kids get intimidated by crowded spaces and loud areas. If you can, go one day on your own first, and enjoy walking around the floor – and scope out the booths that you think your kids will be drawn to. I recommend…

NaBloPoMo #2 – Comikaze 2015

I don’t drink, but I have a hangover. I’m an introvert, and have a chronic illness – I tend not to overbook my weekends, but sometimes things can’t be helped. In the course of the weekend, we had a 5k, Halloween necessities, and went to a comic convention. Even the Oldest Kidlet who is most definitely an extrovert was begging for us to cancel any plans we might have for next weekend, so that we could do nothing. So I have a hangover from being busy, I guess. If that makes any sense. The Convention we went to was Comikaze…

Comedy or Public Shaming: Fan Fic Theatre

Earlier this week, I saw a post going around Tumblr talking about Chris Gore’s upcoming panel at WonderCon – in which a group of comedians would read fanfic. And fic writers were terrified. And it’s tricky. Because I don’t blame the people who were outraged, even though the bulk of them aren’t attending WonderCon. As fanfic and fanart become more mainstream, fan creations have been used to try to paint fandom as something weird. An uncomfortable example (and the most public one) was when Caitlin Moran was moderating a Sherlock panel and had the cast read fanfic. No matter how…

Where did the posts go?

Strangely, writer’s block hasn’t been the issue. On the contrary- I’ve had too many ideas, and somehow the appropriate reaction is to decide not to write anything than make time to write it all and then schedule out the posts. My brain, it is a weird place. Also, there were about two weeks where Little Kidlet was sick/really sick/recovering, and that put a stop to getting much more than my day job done. (More on that in another post, because trust me – it’s a long and involved story) TheBoy and I just got back from Vegas. We went to…

Comikaze 2014: Being Black Widow

This was our third year going to Comikaze Expo, and I have to say – it’s come a long way from the convention that made me want to weep because it took over an hour in the heat to get inside the convention center so I could wait in another line to get my badge. If you live in the LA area, I actually recommend going to Comikaze. It’s affordable, there’s plenty of food at the Convention Center and around it (we went to a nearby parking lot where there were a bunch of great food trucks)- the floor is…

Whitney vs Days of the Wolf

So I’m a big Teen Wolf fan. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to those of you who follow me on Twitter (or Tumblr). I admit, I wasn’t sure about watching it – a non-reality show on MTV? And it’s based on a movie from the 80s? After being wooed by GIF sets on Tumblr, I gave it a shot. I was drawn in by the blend of horror and teen drama. The way that the characters faced just as many real issues as supernatural ones- and then the show evolved into something that other shows I love…

Tuesdays, man.

I know that the Hitchhiker’s Guide quote is about not being able to get the hang of Thursdays, but Tuesdays are killer around here. This morning, TheBoy and I got into a fight. He’s my soulmate, but occasionally, he can be an asshole. On occasion, I can be an dick. It’s a fact. (I’m sure my mom is livid I’m swearing, but it’s true) Not really related to the argument, but his car wouldn’t start so he was home for a bit of the morning. Also, the fight ended and we’ve moved beyond it, so that’s all you get about…

WonderCon Anaheim!

This last weekend was WonderCon, and TheBoy (my husband- as in, let’s hear it for TheBoy!) and I headed off to the Anaheim Convention Center for some fun. Now, I went last year on the Saturday. It was a dreary, rainy day and while the Con floor was pretty empty- there were some amazing panels. So I was pretty excited that I would get another crack at WonderCon. Unfortunately, there just weren’t a lot of panels that I wanted to go to. (Well, I had wanted to go to the League of Extraordinary Ladies panel, but we got a later…

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, I’ve been making plans for my next cosplay. Lady Loki. Well, a hybrid of the Lady Loki from the comics and a feminine version of Loki from the Avengers. I figured out the design, and I’ve figured out how to make the props I want. But there’s a huge problem. While I could finish it in time… there are a lot of things that should be higher up on my priority list. Namely, getting our stuff organized. We’ve been living here in with the in-laws for almost 5 years, and we sort of…

CES: Worshipping at a different altar.

Yes, this is a reference to my last blog post’s title (Worshipping at the alter of tech). Right now, CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is going on, a ginormous tradeshow in Las Vegas. Companies pull out the new tech they’ll be rolling out and the toys that they want you to demand from them (ala concept cars at Auto Shows). And unfortunately, it would seem that CES is filled to brim with booth babes. For those unaware, booth babes are the models hired to decorate a booth. Like the girls standing next to cars at auto shows. And yes, it’s unfortunate.…
